The short answer

There is an official recognition service for self-directed activities. Recognition depends on evaluation; reading an article or keeping a timer does not automatically award hours.

Start with a learning question

Independent learning is more useful when you can explain what you wanted to understand and how you approached it. Choose an appropriate source, make a brief note of the question and record what you learned. This is an educational habit, not a promise that the activity meets a recognition category.

The Saudi National Portal describes the SCFHS self-directed recognition service as an application evaluated for professional relevance and depth. Use the current service requirements rather than assigning your own conversion from minutes of reading to credit hours.

Keep evidence appropriate to the activity

Publishing a paper, contributing to a quality project and attending a course are different activities with different evidence. The official recognition checklist gives activity-specific examples. Do not submit a generic attendance certificate for work that requires a publication or project record.

A useful personal learning note can include the question, source reference, date, concise summary and follow-up action. Keep it non-identifiable. Do not copy an entire copyrighted article into a shared log, and do not include patient records to make the note look more substantial.

For collaborative work, clarify your own contribution and ask the responsible organisation for accurate documentation. Avoid exaggerating authorship, time spent or responsibilities.

Do not plan around an assumed award

Check the applicable categories, submission conditions and current fees before applying. A complete application does not guarantee a particular credit outcome. Keep the result separate from your confirmed balance until it is resolved.

Saudi CME’s articles, planner and private log are not accredited self-learning products and award no hours. They help you organise decisions and evidence. If you need a predictable completion route close to a deadline, compare clearly specified eligible activities rather than relying on an unconfirmed self-directed award.
