The short answer

Choose by the activity’s approved format and your ability to meet its conditions. A recording of an approved live event is not automatically a separately approved self-paced course.

What changes between formats

A live session offers a fixed appointment and a chance to ask questions. Its practical cost is protecting that time. Check the time zone, sign-in procedure, attendance monitoring and whether leaving early affects completion. A replay may support revision without replacing live participation.

Self-paced learning can fit between shifts, but the access expiry, assessment attempts and completion sequence matter. Find out whether progress is saved and whether a failed assessment can be repeated. In-person learning adds travel and scheduling, while supervised practice may make it valuable for goals that cannot be met by watching alone.

Test the format against your week

List the time you can realistically protect, not the time you hope will become available. If a live event overlaps a shift, ask whether another approved session is available. Do not assume joining the meeting while working is sufficient participation.

For recorded study, try a short module on the device and connection you intend to use. Check audio clarity, captions where needed and whether quizzes work on mobile. The National eLearning Center’s standards are useful quality context, but they do not replace a specific medical activity approval.

If a provider cannot explain the learning sequence or support arrangements, that uncertainty belongs in your comparison alongside the price.

Ask these questions before enrolling

Which format does the approval cover? What must I attend or complete? When does access end? What happens if a shift change or technical failure prevents completion? Who handles certificate corrections?

Save the answers with the booking. A suitable format is one that helps you learn and leaves clear evidence of participation. It is not simply the option with the most convenient marketing description.

  3. SCFHS · CPD recognition evidence requirements ↗Evidence varies by activity type. A complete certificate does not itself guarantee recognition.
